Protozoa – Vorticella Print. Issued: Original hand-colored engraving from “Zoological Lectures” drawn engraved and published in London circa 1809 by George Shaw (1751-1813) and principal engraver Mrs. Griffith.
Medium: Hand colored copper engraving. Condition: Print is in very good or better condition with some trivial toning mainly around the margins. Overall very presentable and attractive well worthy of hanging for display. Sheet measures c. 8 ½ x 5 inches.
George Shaw was English botanist and zoologist. He started his career initially as medical practitioner but with time became the assistant lecturer in botany at Oxford University and keeper of the natural history department at the British Museum.He was a co-founder of the Linnean Society as well as fellow of the Royal Society. He is known for the colored prints of animals that were published in his works such as “The Naturalist's Miscellany” “Zoological Lectures” and “Musei Leveriani explicatio anglica et Latina” to name the least.
