FERDINAND SCHUYLER MATHEWS
Peter the Great and John Thorpe Chrysanthemums
The John Thorpe is a Chrysanthemum, a beautiful artistic specimen of a favorite plum purple and crimson variety. The Peter the Great came from Japan about 1865, with a curious association of strength and extreme delicacy in the name and appearance of the flower.
This beautiful lithograph with pronounced Japanese influence, is based from a nature study watercolor by James Callowhill.
Accompanying this print is a pair of companion poems. The first is called Young Love by Kate Upson Clark and second is Strength by Edith M Thomas.
