The periodical began in 1842 and was the first illustrated weekly newspaper. Utilizing full-page illustrations and ads as well as poignant topical journalism the magazine flourished as a weekly until the early 1970s when it became a monthly. With the popularity of amateur photography before World War II the quantity of color illustrations decreased and the magazine relied more on photographs to maintain a customer base. Gradually publication saw brevity and at its end in 2003 issues came only twice a year.
